Identification : Breeding male: Has a long, conical black bill. The face and neck are dark brown, almost black. The chest is brown, sometimes with faint dark streaks (not as many as in the Streaked Weaver). The crown is bright yellow. The belly and under tail-coverts are light brown. Legs and feet are pale pink. The upperparts are dark brown with lighter brown feather edges.
Non-breeding male and female: Bill is flesh-colored and conical. The eyebrow stripe, face, and underparts are yellowish-brown. The upperparts are brown with dark streaks on the back. Wings are dark with pale feather edges. Rump is brown. Tail is dark brown, almost black.
They inhabit open fields, scrublands, rice paddies, and agricultural areas. Often forage in flocks mixed with weavers and sparrows. Nest in trees, building globular nests with a long hanging entrance tunnel. They are resident birds and commonly seen.
