Identification : This large bird has an appearance somewhere between a crow and a pheasant. Its body is mostly black with bright reddish-brown wings and a long black tail. It has deep red eyes. Juveniles are much duller in color, with white bars on the tail and underparts, and black markings on the wings and upperparts.
It is commonly seen in various habitats except dense forests. It resembles the Lesser Coucal but is larger, has a longer bill, and red eyes. Unlike the Lesser Coucal, the adult Greater Coucal lacks white streaks on the wings.
Its call is deep and resonant, sounding like poot-poot-poot.
