Identification : This is a medium-sized waterbird that resembles a chicken in appearance. It is commonly found in wetlands, grasslands, drainage ditches, riversides, parks, and agricultural areas near human settlements. It often forages in open spaces.
Adults have a dark gray upper body contrasting with a white underside, and reddish-brown under-tail coverts. Juveniles have a similar plumage but with generally duller coloration.
It has a distinctive call a raspy, deep, throat-like sound that is drawn out for several seconds. The bird often vocalizes while standing in open areas.
